about me

my practice

what?
My name is Tanna and I am a choreographer. I choreograph not only "dance" in the traditional sense. I also choreograph music, images, films, and games (for example).
why?
I'm glad you asked.

I am interested in identity, psychology, social movements, nature, the outdoors, human nature, the everyday, relationships and humour.

I choreograph to share how I see the world and to ask if you see it the same way.
how?
I process, arrange and construct my work with a propensity for spatial relationships and shapes supported by a (sometimes silent) musical pulse. This, for me, results in a dance piece, regardless of medium.

I try to choreograph with openness and honesty, with a fondness for humour, and with a tenderness for the world, but a hesitancy for the way we inhabit it.

I often use myself, the perspective from which I have the most clarity, to tell these stories, but the work isn't really about me. It's about the world.

my background

I trained as a dancer…

But more importantly...

I was born in Tasmania, Australia and I’ve lived in 9 different counties, states or cities in 4 different countries and I now live in Birmingham, the UK. I’ve been employed by 22 different employers in 15 different industries including garage doors, aerospace inspection, charity work, hospitality, military vehicles, health insurance, food, dance, law, retail and gaming.

This all might have left me feeling very confused about who I am and where my place is in this world. But fear not! Because this same stuff which makes my CV look baffling actually enriches my artistic practice. << click for an example.

who am I?

Once, a man in a suit asked me to describe myself in 3 words. 'Who is the real Tanna?' I responded thus:
