the language of love…

…a choreographed reality tv show

“Tanna has an incredibly rare gift to combine actual humour with perfect timing, spontaneity, improv and warmth”

LIVE EPISODES COMING SOON
(visit my events page for info)
for now, here’s a jingle above and a teaser below…

Subject: Peter Bell, 26, Birmingham

The first episode was performed on Valentine’s Day, 2021 at the Eastside Jazz Club in Birmingham.
The second episode will be performed on 31st May in the Eastside Jazz Club in Birmingham (tickets available soon on my events page)
With a Birmingham cast of 8, each episode combines live performance with snippets of footage. A “choreographed reality television show” about love… the non-romantic kind.
I take on the “expert”, the “producer”, the “choreographer”, an undesirable character.
8 episodes will be performed in total… keep your eyes peeled for dates.
All episodes will be available to view online eventually, too.

the origins of the project

One day I was secretly watching reality television.
The show’s scripted elements and heavily manipulative editing made me see that it was choreographed, just like a dance piece.
I wanted to explore this idea that one could choreograph reality television. So I borrowed methods such as biased data collection, partial scripting, stolen characteristics from cast members and twisted footage.
My practice-based research continues. I am still unsure where the line is drawn between manipulation to make a worthwhile artistic point, and manipulation for unethical purposes.

(I later discovered that The Language of Love shares the name with a “real” reality tv show hosted by Davina McCall on channel 4, 2022… who knew?)
